Childbirth Deaths Drop Dramatically

For all mothers to be, take a deep sigh of relief. A new study by the University of Washington revealed that since 1980 worldwide deaths of women do to childbirth--either during or soon after delivery--has fallen by roughly 40 percent. Researchers say the greatest cause in this reduction is the dramatic reduction in a few of the most populous nations, India, China, Brazil and Egypt. In case you were wondering, in 2008 there were a reported 251 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births. Italy had the lowest number with 4, Afghanistan had the most with 1,575. The United States was a respectable 17, while our neighbors Canada had 7 while Mexico was at 52. The report also found that more than half of all maternal deaths (343,000) occurred in just six countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
