Terrified of Getting Older

What is it about getting older that terrifies you? Why does turning thirty or forty or fifty or seventy (!!) makes you depressed and anxious?

I'm standing in front of a restroom mirror, fixing my hair, and a thirty-something woman is groaning as she looks at her reflection. "I hate this," she says, speaking to no one in particular as she touches up her makeup. "No matter what I do, I can't look any younger." She crumples up the tissue she was using to blot her lipstick and turns to… Continue

Income Gap Between Rich and Poor Widest on Record

New Census data has been released showing that in 2009, the gap between rich and poor has grown. What that means is Americans making more than $100,000 a year (roughly the top 20 percent of income earners) received 49.4% of all income generated in the U.S.. For those below the poverty line, they earned 3.4%, meaning the ratio is 14.5-to-1—up from 13.6 in 2008 and nearly double a low… Continue

The Walk Away Wife Syndrome [Video]

The Walk away wife is a wife who plans the escape from her marriage far in advance from her actually filing for divorce. Michele Weiner-Davis explains the process a walk away wife goes through including her not being happy, the increase and then decrease in her complaining, her plan for escaping, and finally the divorce. Weiner-Davis teaches husbands how to prevent their wives from leaving, while urging women to reconsider what they're leaving behind.

How the Expiring Tax Cuts Affect You

If you pay attention to the news at all you've probably heard the back and forth over the expiring Bush tax cuts. What most are squabbling over are the cuts for the top richest 2%. For them, their federal taxes would return to the rate of 39.6% up from the current 35%. But what about the other 98% of the population? USA Today has put together a nice Q&A piece, with some infographics to help… Continue

Have Sex After Kids.com

There was a pregnant pause over the phone line and then a confused, “Sex once a week…? That’s the challenge?” With a deep sigh, I had to admit that even to my own ears it sounded pretty lame.

How could I explain to my (childless) friend that taking a shower once a week was an exercise in time management gymnastics—and a much higher priority than sex?

“So, um, yes. Sex once a week. That’s the challenge,” I replied, desperate to not feel sexually inadequate.… Continue

The Therapist Couch: How's Your Marriage Balance?

How's the "you," "me" and "we" of your marriage? Are you balanced in a way that works for you both?

For a couple who is tipped way over onto the "me" side, they might live separate lives with different friends, few mutual decisions and little time spent together. I once had a couple who literally never sat down to eat with one another and had separate bedrooms. They essentially had barely a shred of focus on the "we"…

Couples With Sons Less Likely to Divorce than Couples With Daughters

Let's cut straight to the chase, parents of girls are 5 percent more likely to divorce than parents of boys. Moreover, the more daughters or boys added to the equation the greater the gap becomes. For example, if a couple had three daughters, their likelihood of divorce is 10 percent greater than a couple with three boys. This information has been around since 2003 when Gordon Dahl… Continue

Where Did the Sexual 'Chemistry' Go?

Question: I love my partner but don’t feel the ‘chemistry’ we once had. What can I do?

Dr. Trina's response

Here’s four ideas to get you started:

(1) Figure out what/ who the top five priorities are in your life. Is your partner one of them? Do your actions follow through on your words?

(2) Rate how easy or hard it is to communicate with difficult topics like sex, or what is bugging you. If it… Continue

Women's Memories Last Longer than Men's

This will get some conversations going at the dining room table. The Mayo Clinic has done a study that suggests men's memories fail before women's do. The research was published in "Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology," mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is 1.5 times more likely to occur in older men than in older women (those older than 70).… Continue

Economy Also Pushes Dip in Divorce and Infidelity

From the same report we mentioned yesterday published by the Center for Disease Control (click here), the data revealed that not only are marriages and births down, but so too is divorce. In fact, the divorce rate is at its lowest point since the early 1970s. In fact, the divorce rate per 1,000 married women sank to… Continue

Marriage Rates and Birth Rates at All-Time Lows

The American family has seen booms and busts. Like the economy itself, we're currently in a marriage and birth-rate decline. In fact, since the economic downturn began in 2008, marriage and birth rates in the U.S. have fallen to all-time lows according the U.S. Department of Health and Services. It's a dramatic cooling off from the highest birth rate in U.S. history in 2007, when 4.3 million babies… Continue

The What-If Game

Why is it, when the slightest thing goes wrong – you fantasize disaster? What makes you so quick to jump to the worst case scenario?

I'm waiting in line with all the other Starbucks addicts at 6:05 in the morning, and two women walk in, properly suited up, and one of them's saying "What if the trend keeps going down?" and the other replies, "Well, we could diversify the line," "But what if we can't get a loan to diversify," the one says, "Oh boy," the other says "what if the bank… Continue

Breast Feeding is Good for Moms

Scientists led by Dr. Eleanor Schwarz of the University of Pittsburgh conducted a study among a group of 2,233 women ages 40 to 78 who breast-fed their newborns were half as likely to develop Type 2 diabetes 30 years later compared to mothers who used formula. Their explanation for this remarkable drop is that breast feeding can help new mothers drop pregnancy pounds, most of which around the abdomen… Continue

Women, Orgasms and Genetics

Dr. Petra Boynton is a sex educator out of the U.K. In this blog she disputes the idea that an inability to orgasm is due solely to a woman’s genetics.

What I believe is important about her article is: pharmaceutical companies are campaigning hard—multimillions campaigns, paid experts and therapist backing this idea—to have this type of ‘dysfunction’ recognized as real. That way, when (or should I say… Continue

Sister-in-Law Puts You Down

What makes your sister-in-law think she has the right to put you down? Why does she have to pick on you, when you've never done a thing to her?

Your sister-in-law, who never thought you were good enough to marry her brother, snubs you at every opportunity, saying things like "You have gained a pound or 2, haven't you," or "What a lovely dress, did you get that on sale? It looks like last year's fashion." She carries herself as if she's far better than you, is overtly…

I used to have loud sex...

It was a lovely, warm evening, so my husband and I took the kids for a walk around the neighborhood. It was one of those rare, ‘being present, in the moment’ delicious couple times where we chatted while lightly touching each other. Really, really nice.

Then as we passed by a house, a loud scream ripped us from our lovey-dovey reverie. Confused at first, it became apparent—to me—that the ‘scream’ was a woman having very energetic sex.

Giggling, I looked at my husband… Continue
